Woodland's water comes from an aquifer under the North Fork of the Lewis River, collected by a Ranney well: a set of pipes laid horizontally beneath the riverbed. The source is naturally high in iron, so the city's treatment plant on Scott Hill Road oxidizes the iron with chlorine, filters it out, and adds soda ash to raise the pH and control corrosion. No fluoride is added.
What comes out of the tap is moderately hard. The 2025 report lists hardness at 87 mg/L, about 5 grains per gallon, with iron down to 0.03 mg/L after treatment. All six PFAS the state tracks were non-detect in the city's 2023 testing; the next round is due in 2027.
Outside the city system, along the Lewis River and up toward the hills, Woodland is on private wells. Iron staining, sediment and sulfur smell are the common findings, and they each need different treatment, which is why every well quote starts with a full test.
